Bu çalışma, William M. Reddy’nin duygulara ilişkin kuramsal yaklaşımını, tarih felsefesi ile tarihyazımı arasındaki ilişki bağlamında ele alarak, duyguların tarihsel bilgi üretimindeki kurucu rolünü incelemektedir. Reddy, duyguların bireysel yaşantılarla sınırlı olmadığını, kültürel temsiller, bilişsel süreçler ve toplumsal normlarla etkileşim içinde tarihsel olarak biçimlendiğini ileri sürer. Bu doğrultuda geliştirdiği emotive, duygusal rejim, duygusal özgürlük ve duygusal sığınak kavramları, duygusal ifadeleri tarihsel bağlamda yönlendirici ve dönüştürücü etkiler taşıyan edimsel süreçler olarak değerlendirmeye olanak tanır. Duyguların siyasal temsiller, anlatı stratejileri ve tarihsel deneyimlerle kurduğu ilişkiler doğrultusunda yürütülen bu değerlendirme, tarihyazımının kuramsal sınırlarını yeniden düşünmeye yönelen felsefi bir tartışma zemini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışma, duyguların tarihyazımına içkin mi yoksa tematik ve sınırlı bir alan olarak mı ele alınması gerektiği sorusunu, Reddy’nin emotive kavramı etrafında şekillenen çözümleyici yaklaşımıyla ele alarak, tarihte öznenin konumu ve temsilin imkânları gibi temel sorunları yeniden değerlendirmeye açmaktadır.

THE POSITION OF EMOTIONS IN HISTORIOGRAPHY WITHIN REDDY’S CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Öz

This study examines William M. Reddy’s theoretical approach to emotions within the framework of the relationship between the philosophy of history and historiography, focusing on the constitutive role of emotions in the production of historical knowledge. Reddy argues that emotions are not confined to individual experiences but are historically shaped through interactions with cultural representations, cognitive processes, and social norms. The concepts he developed—emotive, emotional regime, emotional liberty, and emotional refuge—allow emotional expressions to be understood as performative processes that exert directive and transformative effects within historical contexts. Drawing on the connections between emotions and political representations, and narrative strategies, and historical experiences, this evaluation provides a philosophical basis for rethinking the theoretical boundaries of historiography. Accordingly, the study engages with the question of whether emotions should be regarded as an inherent dimension of historiography or remain a thematic and limited field of inquiry by employing Reddy’s analytical approach centered on the concept of emotive and reopens fundamental issues such as the position of the subject in history and the possibilities of representation.
