Self-Objectification as a Predictor of Willingness to Undergo Aesthetic Procedures: A Systematic Review Study

In the scope of the study, the relationship between the tendency of self-objectification and the idea of undergoing aesthetic surgery was investigated. The study was conducted through the method of systematic review. Literature searches were carried out in the Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus databases using the keywords: "objectification, self-objectification, cosmetic surgery, aesthetic surgery, plastic surgery". As a result of the search, 880 studies were identified and subsequently examined according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, as well as the PICOS components. After the necessary process of elimination, 14 studies were found to be eligible for systematic review. These studies were conducted in different geographical regions and included a wide demographic range of participants, such as adult women, men and adolescents. Despite this diversity, the findings suggest that a tendency towards self-objectification influences the desire to undergo cosmetic procedures. The study revealed that both women and adolescent girls with high levels of objectifying attitudes, such as body surveillance and body shame, were more likely to undergo aesthetic procedures. To make sense of the increasing number of aesthetic procedures, studies should be conducted to determine the factors affecting this trend.

Estetik İşlem Yaptırma İsteğinin Bir Öngörücüsü Olarak Kendini Nesneleştirme: Sistematik Derleme Çalışması

Öz

Çalışma kapsamında, kendini nesneleştirme tutumu ile estetik olma düşüncesi arasındaki ilişki araştırılmıştır. Çalışma sistematik derleme yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Web of Science, PubMed ve Scopus veri tabanları üzerinden “nesneleştirme, kendini nesneleştirme, kozmetik cerrrahi, estetik cerrahi, plastik cerrrahi” anahtar kavramları ile tarama yapılmıştır. Tarama sonucu elde edilen 880 çalışma belirlenen dâhil etme ve dışlama kriterleri ve PICOS bileşenleri yaklaşımı dikkate alınarak incelenmiştir. Gerekli elemeler sonucu 14 çalışma sistematik incelemeye uygun bulunmuştur. Bu çalışmalar, farklı coğrafi bölgelerde yürütülmüş olup katılımcı profilleri açısından yetişkin kadınlar, erkekler ve ergenleri içeren geniş bir demografik yelpazeye sahiptir. Bu çeşitliliğe rağmen, elde edilen bulgular kendini nesneleştirme tutumunun estetik işlem yaptırma isteğini etkilediği yönündedir. Çalışma sonucunda beden gözetimi ve beden utancı gibi nesneleştirici tutumları yüksek olan kadınların ve genç kızların estetik işlem yaptırma eğilimlerinin de yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Artan estetik işlemleri anlamlandırmak için bu ilişkiyi etkileyen faktörlerin tespitine yönelik çalışmaların yapılması önerilmektedir.
