The aim of this study is to examine Huseyin Sadettin Arel’s works on harmonytraining and to reveal his contributions. For this purpose, his published books onharmony training are examined. Arel prepared two books on harmony training thathave been achieved. The first, almost unknown book is, “Mübtediler İçin Nazari ve Ameli Ahenk Dersleri” (Theoretical and Practical Harmony Lessons for Beginners I);the second one is, “Rhythm Lessons/Harmony for Turkish Music” The first book waswritten in Ottoman Turkish and published in 1339/1923. The second book was firstpublished in the journal titled, “Musiki Mecmuası (trans. Journal of Music) in 1955, starting with the issue number of 84 (Öztuna, 1986:77). In 1969, in the same journalbut later issues (number 242 to 252) the workwas reissued in fascicles of 10. Inaddition to these publications, Arel has 72 polyphonic works written for severalinstruments . In this study, a literature survey is presented andearlier studies about the research subject on harmony are examined. Secondarily, theinvestigations are made on terminology used in books (Turkish music terminology),harmony training and harmonic analyses of sample works. According to the findings, itis seen that Huseyin Sadettin Arel made a significant contribution to the field inTurkey with his studies about harmony training and his published Works. Furthermore,his influence continued with his students, as well as the many terms he coined that areused nowadays in harmony training
