BEING A SELF-EMPLOYED FEMALE CPA IN TÜRKİYE: A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
Öz
In Türkiye, the accounting profession is predominantly male dominated. This study aimed to identify the challenges faced by self- employed female accounting professionals. The study first provides information about the event titled “Women in Turkey and Their Role in Our Profession on the 100th Anniversary of Our Republic.” It then presents the findings of a study conducted using a semi-structured interview technique with self- employed female accountants in Tekirdağ province. Participants were asked questions regarding the difficulties they encountered in their professional lives. The analysis of the interview data revealed several key findings: living in a patriarchal society had a negative impact on women's professional experiences; compared to their male counterparts, women faced greater challenges in attracting clients; domestic responsibilities—such as cleaning and caring for children or elderly family members—adversely affected their professional performance; they struggled to allocate time for themselves; and they often lacked sufficient support from their families. In particular, the periods of the Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of inflation accounting were reported as especially challenging. Moreover, a significant number of participants indicated that they had encountered at least one instance of gender-based discrimination during their careers. Many also noted that they felt compelled to be particularly mindful of their appearance in professional settings, driven by a fear of being misunderstood by others
