17-18 Ekim 2024 tarihlerinde Trabzon Üniversitesi İslâmî İlimler Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezi tarafından düzenlenen “Geçmişten Günümüze Trabzon’da Dini Hayat Sempozyumu II”, “Trabzon-İstanbul-Hicaz Arasında Çok Yönlü Bir Osmanlı Âlimi: Muhammed et-Trabzonî el-Medenî” temasıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sempozyumda, 18. yüzyılda yaşamış, çok yönlü bir Osmanlı âlimi olan Muhammed et-Trabzonî el-Medenî’nin ilmî kişiliği, eserleri ve Osmanlı ilim geleneğindeki yeri farklı açılardan ele alınmıştır. Açılış ve kapanış konuşmaları hariç toplam altı oturumda hadis, fıkıh, kelâm, belâgat, tasavvuf ve ilmî miras aktarımı gibi çeşitli disiplinlerle ilgili on sekiz bildiri sunulmuştur. Tebliğlerde Trabzonî’nin şârih, müellif, müstensih, muhaşşî ve muhakkik kimliği ön plana çıkarılmış, eserlerinin hem içerik hem yöntem açısından detaylı analizleri yapılmıştır. Sempozyum, ilmî verimliliği ve konuya dair geniş perspektif sunması bakımından başarılı bulunmuş; bununla birlikte bazı tebliğlerde içerik tekrarları ve konu dışına sapmalar gibi eksiklikler gözlemlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, Trabzonî’nin ilmî mirasının daha derinlikli anlaşılmasına katkı sunan bu sempozyumun çıktılarının bilimsel bir yayın haline getirilmesi ve benzeri tematik toplantıların sürdürülmesi gerektiği vurgulanmıştır.

A Commemoration of Muhammad al-Trabzoni al-Madani: A Versatile Ottoman Scholar between Trabzon, Istanbul, and the Hejaz

The Second Symposium on Religious Life in Trabzon from Past to Present, organized by the Center for Islamic Studies and Research at Trabzon University, was held in Trabzon on 17–18 October under the theme “A Versatile Ottoman Scholar between Trabzon, Istanbul, and the Hejaz: Muhammad al-Trabzoni al-Madani.”

The event brought together scholars and researchers from various universities across Türkiye who specialize in Islamic studies. The symposium aimed to commemorate Muhammad al-Trabzoni al-Madani, a prominent and multifaceted Ottoman scholar of the eighteenth century, and to examine his intellectual legacy and scholarly contributions from diverse perspectives.

The program comprised six academic sessions, excluding the opening and closing ceremonies. The first three sessions were held on Thursday, 17 October, and the remaining three on Friday, 18 October. A total of eighteen papers were presented, with three presentations in each session.

The opening ceremony commenced at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, 17 October, following the moment of silence and the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem. The program continued with a recitation of the Qur’an by Lachın Guliyev, Lecturer at the Faculty of Theology, Trabzon University.

The opening session was graced by the attendance of distinguished guests, including Ahmet Yüksek Günay, Deputy Mayor of Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality; Prof. Dr. Emin Aşıkkutlu, Rector of Trabzon University; Selami Aydın, Mufti of Trabzon; and Hayati Doksanoğlu, Director of the Hafız Ali Haydar Özak Religious Specialization Center, along with numerous participants from academia and the public sphere.

The symposium provided an important platform for academic dialogue on the intellectual and cultural legacy of Muhammad al-Trabzoni al-Madani, contributing to a deeper understanding of the scholarly, social, and religious life of eighteenth-century Ottoman thought.
