Neo-epic ınterpretation of Ahmethan Yılmaz’s “Californian Brasserie Restauran”
Abstract
As a writer contributing to children's
literature, Ahmethan Yılmaz introduced himself in the 1980s. His poetry books
Sokaklar Açmak and Ankara İç Savaşında Üç Hainin Portesi, which were published
in the 2000s, show the power of his poesy, too. The power of Yılmaz's poetry
comes from his sensitive, experimental and epic character poems he wrote in the
social direction. What led him to write such sensitive poems was his meeting
the Neo-Epic Poetry that was pioneered by Hakan Arslanbenzer in the 1990s. The
Neo-Epic Poetry emerges to confront with twentieth-century poetry on behalf of
the society. Neo-Epic or with a different name, New Heroic Poetry, is the
effort of seeing the world, which is the subject of a story, without ornaments,
naked and sometimes even uglier than it really is in order to emphasize
something well enough. The intention of the poet is to try to change minds. The
epic poet who has no power to change the world chooses to change minds. Our
epic poem, which started with the Namık Kemal, Tevfik Fikret and Mehmet Akif in
the modern Turkish literature, continues this direction with the İkinci Yeni.
As of the 1990s, it sustains its existence with its neo-epic character that is
included in daily life. The poem Californian Brasserie Restauran published in
Ahmethan Yılmaz's poetry book Sokaklar Açmak was written in accordance with the
experimental and Neo-Epic Poetry style of the 2000s. In this article, the
poetry of Ahmethan Yılmaz, the characteristics and, the characteristics and
techniques of neo-epic will be discussed and the poem Californian Brasserie
Restauran poem will be analyzed in the context of Neo-Epic Poetry.
