Öz

Günümüzün dijital dünyasında bir çeviri projesinde görev alan çevirmenler çoğu zaman farklı fiziksel ortamlarda birbirleriyle herhangi bir şekilde iletişim kurmadan çalışırlar. Bu projelerde, çevirmenler arasında dil ve biçem birliğini sağlamak için kullanılan bazı referans materyaller vardır. Bunlar çeviri talimatları, terim listeleri, koşut metinler, çeviri ve terim bellekleri ve biçem kılavuzlarıdır. Çeviri biçem kılavuzu, çevrilen metinlerde dilsel ve görsel tutarlılığı sağlamak ve müşteri beklentisine uygun çeviri yapmak amacıyla hazırlanan kılavuz olarak tanımlanabilir. Biçem kılavuzlarının çeviri endüstrisinde kullanımı oldukça yaygın olmasına karşın konu çeviribilim literatüründe pek fazla yer bulmamıştır. Özellikle Türkçe çeviribilim literatürü ele alındığında birkaç yayın dışında terimin kullanımına rastlanmamıştır. Taramanın kapsayıcı olması için Google Akademik’te biçem kılavuzu, stil kılavuzu, biçim kılavuzu olarak terimin olası üç farklı kullanımı ile yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın ampirik ayağı için yine Google arama motoru kullanılmış ve ulaşılan birkaç biçem kılavuzundan ikisi seçilmiştir. Bunlar Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Dışişleri Bakanlığı Avrupa Birliği Başkanlığı tarafından hazırlanmış olan AB Mevzuatı Çeviri Rehberi ve Microsoft tarafından hazırlanmış olan Turkish Style Guide’dır. Bu ikisinin seçilmesinin nedeni iki farklı uzmanlık alanına ait olması ve Türkiye çeviri sektöründe yaygın olarak kullanılmasıdır. Bunlara ek olarak Burg Translations adlı çeviri işletmesine ait bir biçem kılavuzu şablonununa rastlanmış ve ampirik incelemeye dahil edilmiştir. Kılavuzların ve şablonun kapsam ve içerikleri incelenip betimlenmiştir. İncelemede şu sorulara cevap aranmıştır: 1-Biçem kılavuzlarının içeriğinde neler bulunur? 2-Biçem kılavuzu hazırlarken hangi ilkelere dikkat edilir? Betimlemeden ve literatür okumasından elde edilen verilerle biçem kılavuzu hazırlarken ya da güncellerken başvurulabilecek bir şablon önerisinde bulunulmuştur. Bu çalışmanın gerek çeviribilimdeki gerekse çeviri sektöründeki biçem kılavuzu uygulamalarında yol gösterici olması umut edilmektedir.

A descriptive analysis on translation style guides and a style guide template suggestion

In today’s digital world, translators assigned in translation projects often work at different locations without any communication with each other. Therefore, some reference materials are used in order to preserve linguistic and stylistic unity among translations produced by various translators. These are translation specifications, term lists, parallel texts, translation- and term- bases and style guides. Translation style guide can be defined as a text that is prepared to help produce translations that are linguistically and stylistically consistent and meet the expectations of the client. Although the use of style guides is common in translation industry, it has not been well studied in translation studies. Especially when the Turkish translation studies literature is concerned, only a few studies cite the term ‘style guide’. The search was conducted on Google Scholar using different Turkish of the term- ‘biçem kılavuzu’, ‘stil kılavuzu’ and ‘biçim kılavuzu’- in order to reach all the studies related with the topic. Google search engine was used for the ampirical part of the study and of the few guides found two were selected for analysis. These are Turkish Translation Style Guide prepared by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate of EU Affairs and Turkish Style Guide by Microsoft Company. The reason for selecting these two was that they belong to different fields of expertise and are well-known and commonly used in Turkish translation market. Also, a style guide template that belongs to Burg Translations was found and added to the ampirical corpus of the study. The scope and contents of the guides and the template were analyzed and described. In the analysis, two questions were asked: 1- What is included in translation style guies? 2- What are the principles that should be followed while preparing a style guide? Based on the data obtained from literature review and ampirical analysis a style guide template was developed and suggested. It could be used while producing a style guide from scratch or updating one. We hope that this study will help those from translation studies and translation market who are interested in using, preparing and updating style guides.
