Relationship between Teachers’ Humor Styles and Their Views on Organizational Cynicism

This study was conducted in order to determine whether or not teachers’ humor styles predicted their perception of organizational cynicism. In accordance with this purpose, first of all the current situation was described and then, it was tried to determine at what level teachers’ humor styles predicted their perception of organizational cynicism. Besides, the sample of the study, which was designed as a survey model, consisted of 354 teachers working in the center of Kutahya province. The data was collected by using the Humor Styles Questionnaire and Organizational Cynicism Scale. For the data analysis descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were applied. The humor styles which teachers gave the highest scores were Affiliative Humor, Self-Enhancing Humor, Aggressive Humor and Self-Defeating Humor, respectively. In addition, the affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive and self-defeating humor styles of teachers did not differ in terms of gender. In terms of seniority, the affiliative and self-defeating humor types of teachers did not differ whereas their self-enhancing and aggressive humor types differed significantly. On the other hand, teachers possessed the least cynicism perception in the dimension of affective cynicism, and it was followed respectively by the dimensions of cognitive and behavioral cynicism. Teachers’ cynicism perception did not differ significantly in terms of gender, however in terms of school type, subject matter and seniority teachers’ cynicism perception differed statistically and in a significant way in some dimensions. According to the results obtained from regression analysis, all humor styles of teachers gave a low, significant relationship with affective, cognitive and behavioral cynicism perceptions. Additionally, humor styles used by teachers explained nine percent of the total variance in cognitive cynicism perception, four percent in affective cynicism perception, and approximately thirteen percent in behavioral cynicism perception.
