Ibn Hazm (d. 456/1064) an erudite and exceptional Zahiri (literalist) scholar of Andalus isa prominent thinker who had an influence on the later developments of Islamic thoughtwith his works and style. His oppinions on the prophetic tradition (sunnah and hadith)have an essential position in understanding of his methodology and system which derivedfrom the literal interpretation of the texts. In this respect, his approaches to the prophetictraditions give us interesting clues in understanding the zahiri mentality. This article aimsbriefly to present the essential ideas of Ibn Hazm on the prophetic tradition, and followthe sign of zahiri mentality in these ideas with special reference to his importantmethodological work al-Ihkam.
