A LOOK AT NEW YORK DADA CERAMICS BEATRICE WOOD'S SOPHISTICATED PRIMITIVES

Abstract

American artist Beatrice Wood appears as an important representative of New York Dada ceramics. The lack of sufficient resources and information about the artist in the Turkish literature searches made it necessary to conduct such a study. This research aims to examine the artist's ceramic sculpture works called Sophisticated Primitives. Within the scope of this study, which is partly biography and partly analysis, Wood's role as a female artist, her artistic practices and her understanding of aesthetics are emphasized. Evaluations were made using the work analysis method on seven examples selected from the artist's Sophisticated Primitives series. The forms of these sculptures, their purpose of construction and the messages they wanted to convey were tried to be conveyed by supporting comments. The research, completed with the conclusion section, includes the messages that the artist wants to give against social norms about women through these sculptures. It is thought that the information included in the research and the results obtained will be useful for art fields that create plastic works, especially the ceramics field.

New York Dada Seramiğine Bir Bakış Beatrıce Wood’un Sofistike İlkelleri

Öz

Amerikalı sanatçı Beatrice Wood, New York Dada seramiğinin önemli bir temsilcisi olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Yapılan Türkçe literatür taramalarında sanatçı hakkında yeterince kaynağın ve bilginin olmaması böyle bir çalışmanın yapılmasını gerekli kılmıştır. Bu araştırma sanatçının Sofistike İlkeller adını verdiği seramik heykel eserlerini ele almaya yöneliktir. Kısmen biyografi kısmen de analiz niteliğindeki çalışmanın kapsamında, Wood’un kadın bir sanatçı olarak kendine biçtiği rolün, sanatsal pratiklerinin ve estetik anlayışının üzerinde durulmuştur. Sanatçının Sofistike İlkeller serisinden seçilmiş yedi adet örnek üzerinden eser analizi yöntemi kullanılarak değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır. Bu heykellerin biçimleri, yapılış amaçları ve verilmek istenen mesajlar yorumlarla desteklenerek aktarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Sonuç bölümü ile tamamlanan araştırma, sanatçının bu heykeller aracılığıyla kadınlar hakkındaki toplumsal normlara karşı vermek istediği mesajları içermektedir. Araştırmada yer verilen bilgilerin ve elde edilen sonuçların seramik alanı başta olmak üzere plastik eser yaratan sanat alanları için faydalı olacağı düşünülmektedir.
