Current Approaches to Physical, Physiological and Psychological Measurements in Sports

Öz

Aim: This study is a narrative review that examines the physical, physiological, and psychological measurement methods used in sports sciences within the framework of traditional and modern approaches
Method: Within the scope of the research, national and international studies published between 2015 and 2025 were reviewed using a systematic search approach. The literature search was conducted across the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and TR Dizin databases. A total of 40 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results were categorized under three main themes based on the type of measurement used: physical, physiological, and psychological. During the analysis process, the methodological characteristics of the studies, measurement tools employed, data collection frequency, validity and reliability levels, and application domains were systematically examined.
Results: It has been observed that, although traditional measurement methods offer advantages in terms of low cost, ease of application, and field adaptability, they may be inadequate due to limited parameter diversity and measurement precision. In contrast, modern technologies—such as force platforms, bioelectrical impedance analysis systems, accelerometer-based mobile applications, EEG devices, and virtual reality-based tests- provide more comprehensive, objective, and real-time feedback, thereby contributing significantly to individualized training planning, injury risk assessment, and psychological performance monitoring. However, these systems also present certain limitations, including high costs, technical expertise requirements, and limited accessibility.
Conclusion: Current literature suggests that the most effective approach involves developing hybrid models that integrate the practicality of traditional tests with the data depth offered by modern technologies. Such an integrated framework enables the multidimensional, reliable, and sustainable assessment of physical, physiological, and psychological performance in athletes.
