Hellenistic Basket Handled Amphora Fragment from Olba Excavations

Öz

Basket-handled amphorae have been produced in Cyprus, Phonecian shores and Egypt from the 8th century BC to the end of the 2nd century BC. This group has been among the earliest datable amphorae in the Eastern Mediterranean. Distribution of this group is mainly in the Eastern Mediterranean but they have been also recorded in the Aegean region in less quantity. Hellenistic Period is the earliest phase of Olba. Hellenistic finds in the city are not intense yet. A basket-handled amphora fragment with its preserved shoulder, incomplete lip and basket handle has been found in the acropolis of the city out of the stratigraphic level. However, when the general history of the city and the amphora group are taken into consideration, this amphora fragment is suggested to belong to the 3rd - 2nd centuries BC in the Hellenistic Period.

Olba Kazısı’nda Ele Geçen Hellenistik Dönem’e Ait Bir Sepet Kulplu Amphora Parçası

Öz

Sepet kulplu amphoralar, MÖ 8. yüzyıldan MÖ 2. yüzyılın son çeyreğine Kıbrıs, Suriye-Fenike kıyıları ve Mısır’da üretilmişlerdir. Bu grup, Doğu Akdeniz Bölgesi’nin en erkene tarihlenen amphoraları arasında yer almaktadır. Grubun yayılım alanı, yoğun olarak Doğu Akdeniz olmakla birlikte Ege Denizi çevresinde de daha az oranda görülmektedirler. Hellenistik Dönem, Olba kentinin bilinen en erken evresidir. Bu döneme ait yoğun buluntularla henüz karşılaşılmamaktadır. Olba akropolisinde ele geçen bir sepet kulplu amphoranın gövde, omuz ve ağzın form vermeyen kısmı, stratigrafik yapılanmadan ele geçmemiştir. Buna karşın kentin ve amphora grubunun genel tarihi dikkate alındığında, bu amphora parçasının Hellenistik Dönem içerisinde MÖ 3.- 2. yüzyıla tarihlenebileceği düşünülmektedir.
