The article examines two of Metin Erksan’s films, Sevmek Zamanı (Time to love) and Sensiz Yaşayamam (I cannot live without you), with regard to their relationship with tradition and their efforts to try different, alternative things outside of classical cinema. The article begins by examining the films in terms of their relations with classical cinema. It seeks to identify the points where they differ from classical narration, if any, and thus to understand their possible ties with a non-classical cinematic understanding. It then tries to identify ties with tradition in the films and to assess whether, if the films’ structures differ from classical narrative, they allow alternative readings. The study also seeks to understand whether departures from the classical style in these films may form part of a pattern, and whether this pattern (especially for Sevmek Zamanı) can create an alternative structure or way of drawing upon tradition. At the heart of these questions is the hope that opening new lines of academic inquiry and broadening our understanding of existing works will help clarify the origin and structure of a cinematic understanding based on local, traditional, historical sources. However, the study concludes that while Metin Erksan’s films are relatively removed from the classical style and neorealist influences, their departures from the classical style do not seem to form a pattern, and the films are reluctant to recompose structure and tradition. They are therefore poorly suited to creating alternative or fresh structures and to deepening approaches based on traditional sources.
