The effect of place image and place attachment on residents’ perceived value and support for tourism development

Abstract

Residents are one of the important stakeholders of destinations affected by tourism development. Positive or negative visitor-residents interaction is counted among the determinants of the residents' support for tourism. In addition, residents’ place attachement to the destination and their perceived image play an important role in their support for tourism development. The aim of this study is to measure the effect of place image and place attachment on the perceived value of residents and their support for tourism development. Data were obtained by conducting 450 face-to-face surveys with the residents of Şanlıurfa using the convenience sampling method. The data were analyzed through a confirmatory and structural equation model. As a result, it has been determined that place attachment and place image have no effect on tourism development support of local people, and place image is an important predictor of place attachment.
