Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil have begun translating into Turkish from various Western languages at a young age, and continued doing so until the end of his life. He has also penned a large number of articles about translation. A reading of Sanata Dair [On Art], a collection of his articles, shows that he was interested in how a translation should be done, evaluated specific translations into Turkish, and made observations about the general state of translations into Turkish. Halit Ziya adopted a critical approach in his articles on the issue of translation, offering questions, insights, criticism, praise, and recommendations. That a giant of Turkish literature paid close attention to translation activity, which is critical for the development of language, culture, and literature, sheds light on the role played by translation in the development of Turkish language and literature. Halit Ziya’s lifelong interest in translation nourished his art, and his ideas based on personal experience in the field constitute an important contribution to translations into Turkish. Moreover, he makes an important contribution to the history of translation in Turkey with the information he reports.
