Alfred Marshall's “The Element of Time” and the Problems it Created in Economic Theory

Öz

In mainstream texts of economic thought, Alfred Marshall is referred to one of the founders of neoclassical economics which uses reversible time concept and mechanical methodology. On the other hand, the relevant literature has rediscovered the use of irreversible time concepts and evolutionary analysis in Marshall, especially in the last thirty years. Despite his significant influence during his period and later, neither his pupils nor his followers paid enough attention to “the element of time” and the problems he thought they caused in the theory. This study aims to discuss this issue, which is directly related to two critical problems of economic theory such as value and equilibrium.
