Kurgunun Mimarisi: Anlatısalığın Bilgisayar Temelli Analizi

Öz

Kurmaca, hem edebî bir kurgu düzeni hem de kültürel tahayyülün bir ifadesi olarak, hikâye anlatımıyla metinsel temsil arasındaki değişken sınırları çizen bir yapıdadır. Bu makalede, çağdaş edebiyatta anlatısallık ile türsel niteliklerin kurmacayı, kurmaca dışından nasıl ayırdığı sorgulanmaktadır. Anlatıbilim kuramını temel alarak, geniş ölçekli bir İngilizce derlem üzerinde yürütülen hesaplamalı “uzaktan okuma” yaklaşımıyla; anlatı kuramının temel stratejileri olan anlatı evreni, gerilim ve olay örgüsü gibi nitelikleri incelenmektedir. Anlatısallık, ölçülebilir göstergeler üzerinden incelenmektedir: bunlar; sahneleme (mekân ve kişilerin sunumu), olay örgüsünün ilerleyişi (olayların açımlanması) ve bilişsel gerilim (merak/gerilim ile belirsizliğin yönetimi) aşamalarından oluşur. Üç aşamalı çözümlememizde önce segment düzeyinde yapılan istatistiksel karşılaştırmalarla, kurmaca ile kurmaca dışının anlatı olay örgüsünün; hikayenin anlatı bileşenlerini nasıl sistemli bir şekilde farklı kullandığını ortaya çıkarıyoruz. Devamında, istatistiksel testlerle, kurmaca/kurmaca dışı ikiliğinin ötesinde kimi türlerin özgül anlatısallık profilleri taşıdığını göstererek kurmaca biçimlerinin çeşitliliğini doğruluyoruz. Son olarak, denetimli makine öğrenimi ile bu anlatısal özelliklerin kurmacayı güvenilir biçimde öngördüğünü kanıtlayıp kurmacanın temel özelliklerinin anlatı nitelikleri ile tanımlanabildiğini gösteriyoruz. Bir arada değerlendirildiğinde bu hesaplamalı bulgular, anlatısallığın ve bileşenlerinin kurmacanın edebî bir biçim olarak özgüllüğünün merkezinde konumlandığını göstermektedir. Çalışmamız, karşılaştırmalı çözümleme olanağı sunmakta ve ayrıca hem kurmaca hem de kurmaca dışındaki anlatı olay örgüsünün hesaplamalı olarak öngörülebilir olduğunu göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak, araştırmamız kurmacanın biçimsel niteliklerini modellemede hesaplamalı yöntemlerin değerini teyit etmekte; bu da hikâye anlatımının mimarisine yeni içgörüler sağlarken edebiyat çalışmalarında anlatısallığın merkezî konumunu pekiştirmektedir.

The Architecture of Fictionality: A Computational Analysis of Narrative Divides

Öz

Fictionality, as both a literary construct and a marker of cultural imagination, defines the shifting boundaries between storytelling and documentary representation. This study examines how narrativity and genre features distinguish fiction from nonfiction in contemporary literature. Drawing on narratological theory, we analyze how texts create worlds, build suspense, and organize events—central strategies of storytelling—using computational distant reading applied to a large-scale English-language corpus. Narrativity is operationalized via quantifiable features: staging (the introduction of settings and characters), plot progression (the unfolding of events), and cognitive tension (the management of suspense and uncertainty). Our three-stage analysis begins with segment-level statistical comparisons, which reveal that fiction and nonfiction deploy narrativity in systematically different ways across narrative arcs. Next, statistical tests demonstrate that, beyond the fiction/nonfiction binary, specific genres display distinct narrativity profiles, confirming the diversity of fictional forms. Finally, supervised machine learning shows that these narrativity features reliably predict fictionality, underscoring their explanatory power. Together, these computational findings demonstrate that narrativity and its constituent elements are central to fiction’s uniqueness as a literary form. This research enables a valid comparative analysis and also demonstrates that narrative arcs in both fiction and nonfiction are computationally predictable. Ultimately, our study affirms the value of computational methods for modeling the formal features of fiction, which offers fresh insights into the architecture of storytelling and reinforces narrativity’s central role in literary studies.
