To lend a hand in the struggle: Publishing policies and language politics in the Turkish retranslations of George Woodcock’s Anarchism

Öz

Canadian anarchist thinker, philosopher and essayist George Woodcock (1912-1995) contributed to the development of anarchist thinking not only inside but also outside of his homeland with his several seminal books on anarchism and anarchist figures in history. Born into a poor family, trying various jobs throughout his life but managing to carve out his own path as a writer, Woodcock was bold enough to risk conflict with George Orwell, the leading anarchist of his era. His outlook on anarchism inspired readers to think beyond the given categories of nationality and race in a time when nationalism was on the rise in Canada. This study aims to reveal how ideology is reflected in the Turkish retranslations of Woodcock’s prominent work, Anarchism: A History of Libertarian Ideas and Movements (1962). This study comprises three parts. The first part centers upon the historical journey of anarchist thought in Türkiye from Ottoman Empire to the modern republic. The second part discusses the conceptualization of retranslation in the light of the relationalities between socio-political environment and publishing policies surrounding the Turkish retranslations of George Woodcock’s Anarchism, which was firstly published in 1967 and subsequently became the most frequently retranslated work on anarchism in the country after Proudhon's seminal text What is Property? The third part focuses on the impacts of language politics in the Turkish retranslations of Woodcock’s Anarchism with insights on translatorial decisions. In conclusion, it has been revealed that retranslation hypothesis can be invalidated in the context of financial concerns and commercial efforts through the effects of publishing policies and language politics over the motives of retranslation in today's publishing world.
