THE EFFECT OF BOARDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' PARTICIPATION IN SPORTS ACTIVITIES ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND SOME PSYCHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS
Abstract
The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of boarding secondary school students' participation in sports activities on academic success and some psychological parameters. The sample of the study consists of secondary school students receiving boarding education in the Feke district of Adana province. A total of 56 male students participated in the study, 28 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group. Demographic information form, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and Self-Efficacy Scale were used as data collection tools in the study. Additionally, 12 weeks of volleyball training was applied to the experimental group. All data of the research were analyzed in the SPSS 26.0 package program. In the study, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was performed to measure whether the data showed normal distribution, parametric tests were applied according to the analysis results, and t-test analysis was performed to compare paired groups. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis was applied. According to the findings, a significant difference was found between the participants' UCLA Loneliness Scale pre-test and post-test scores (p<0.05). No significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the self-efficacy scale (p>0.05). In terms of academic achievement, there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the experimental group (p<0.05), while there was no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the control group (p>0.05). According to the correlation analysis reflecting the relationship between the scales, a positive significant relationship was found between the academic achievement pre-test and post-test scores, the self-efficacy scale pre-test scores, the self-efficacy scale post-test and emotional self-efficacy post-test scores. No relationship was found between the loneliness scale pre-test scores and other post-test scores.
As a result of the research, it was concluded that participation in sports activities has a significant effect on academic success, but does not have a significant effect on loneliness and self-efficacy.
