ANALYSING SPORTS TRAIT SELF-CONFIDENCE FEATURES OF ICE HOCKEY PLAYERS
Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyse sports trait self-confidence features of ice hockey players. The sample of this study includes totally 435 athletes (120 women, 315 men) in the range of 16-30 years’ old who are active in ice hockey sports in Erzurum, Ankara, İzmir and İstanbul provinces where ice hockey halls are located. In this study, personal information form and Sports Trait Self-Confidence Scale (STSS) consisting 13 entry and single sub-dimension which were developed by Vealey (1986) and the validity and reliability study of the Turkish form carried out by Yıldırım (2013) are used as a data collection tool. Since there are more than 30 athletes in each of the groups, independent samples t-test are used in these comparisons. The homogeneity of the variance between the groups is examined by Levene Test before analysing the data. While ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) technique is used for the comparison of the hypothesis which is fulfilled, Kruskal-Wallis-H Test which is the non-parametric alternative of ANOVA is used for the comparison of the hypothesis that is not fulfilled. According to the gender variable of the scores acquired from Sports Trait Self-Confidence, the results are favourable in terms of male athletes; athletes aged 26 and over have the highest arithmetic mean and it is significant according to age variable; the scores are meaningful for high school graduates according to education variable; ice hockey players who are active in this sport for 6 years and over have the highest arithmetic mean and it is significant according to duration variable; and lastly there is a significant difference in favour of national athletes according to being a national athlete or not variance (p<0,001). The athletes living in İstanbul have the highest arithmetic mean but not significant according to city variable (p>0,001). As a result of the research, it has been concluded that the individual’s gains in social structure are effective in the determination of sports trait self-confidence features by considering various demographic variables.
