Analysis of investment according to different farm size groups in broiler farming in Türkiye

Öz

Purpose: In this study, it was aimed to make an investment analysis of broiler production in Türkiye.

Methodology: The research area was carried out in Manisa, Balıkesir, Bolu, Sakarya and Mersin provinces, which constitute 57.12% of Türkiye's broiler stock. The 139 farms engaged in broiler breeding with contract production model were divided into three groups according to their production capacities. Data for the 2022 production period were obtained by survey method.

Findings: The net present value of the investment was calculated as $226 198.42, $714 230.83 and $2 253 026.74 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd group farms, respectively. The benefit-cost ratios according to farm size groups are 1.14, 1.24 and 1.35 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd group farms, respectively. The internal profitability ratios of the farms  were 27.85%, 39.71% and 70.69% in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd group farms, respectively. Accordingly, it was determined that the net present values of the investments in all farm groups are positive, the benefit-cost ratios are greater than one and the internal profitability ratios are suitable for investing in this sector. When evaluated according to farm groups, it is concluded that investment in large farms is more economically advantageous.

Originality/Value: This study fills a literature gap by presenting a financial and economic assessment of investments in broiler production in Türkiye. This is considered important for entrepreneurs and policymakers interested in investing in the broiler sector.
