Turkey's Potential Dried Fig Export: a Gravıty Model Approach
Öz
In this study, Turkey's dried fig export structure and its influencing factors were investigated by gravity model
approach, which is widely used in foreign trade analysis. The data for the period from 1996 to 2015 and 19
countries were included in the study. Turkey's actual export values of dried fig were compared with the potential
export values obtained from the model results. The model parameters are estimated by using the flexible
generalized least squares regression, using the Parks-Kmenta estimator.
According to the obtained gravity equation results, 1% increase in GDP per capita of importing countries would
increase Turkey's dried fig exports by 0.68%. The 1% increase in population of importing countries was also
found to increase Turkey's exports by 0.39%. The 1% increase in the distance between Turkey and the importer
countries would reduce Turkey's export of dried fig by 0.48%. The fact that there is a sea connection between
Turkey and the importer countries has a positive effect. On the other hand, the fact that the importer country is an
EU member and also the free trade agreement between Turkey and the importing country has a positive effect. It
was found according to model results that the actual export to EU countries, France, Germany Italy, Sweden and
Slovakia from Turkey is more than the potential export. Also, the actual export to the Netherlands, Spain,
England, Austria and Denmark is below potential export. In addition, the actual export to Australia, Switzerland,
Egypt, Brazil and Russia is more than the potential export.
