Sustainability of Farmers' Practices According to Extensionits: Case of Aegean Region
Öz
The public extension organizations are the most important actor for the transfer of sustainable agricultural practices to the farmers in Turkey. In this study, public extension workers evaluated the sustainability levels of the farmers' practices. For gathering the data, interviews with 177 public extension workers were done in Izmir, Manisa, and Aydın Provinces. The average age of extensionists is 38.7 and 81.9% of them graduated from agricultural faculties. The professional experience of extension staff is 12 years on average in the research area. The targets in extension activities are different according to the provinces. Productivity increase in Manisa and environmental protection in Izmir are the priorities of agricultural production. Extensionists, who graduated from the agricultural faculties, pay more attention to sustainable applications. The Farm Sustainability Index was developed to measure the sustainability levels of farmers' practices in the study. According to the extensionists, 36.2% of the farmers are not sustainable. Generally, farmers have a low level of sustainability. There is no difference between farmers in terms of sustainability by the provinces. The adoption levels of some basic sustainable suggestions such as protection of the grassland, regular soil analysis, green fertilization, taking erosion protection preventions by farmers are not at intended level in the region. The awareness should be created through training and introducing activities on sustainability in rural areas. In case of adopting of sustainable practices, the positive impact is not limited in the farmer's field, it contribute to environmental and community health, too.
