Yakın Dönem Türkiye Çalışmalarında Olanaklar ve Sınırlılıklar Açısından İngiliz Arşivleri

Öz

İnsanoğlunun geçmiş ve gelecek arasında bir arayış içerisinde olması aslında nereden geldiğini ve nereye gittiğini anlamaya dönük bir çabanın ürünü olarak değerlendirilmelidir. Söz konusu çabanın geçmiş kısmında arşivler bütün insanlık için vaz geçilmez bir öneme sahiptir. Çalışma, bu önemin farkındalığına bir katkı sunmak adına İngiliz Ulusal Arşivi, İngiliz Milli Kütüphane Arşivi, Kraliyet Coğrafya Topluluğu Arşivini olanaklar ve sınırlılıklar bağlamında ele almayı hedeflemektedir. İngiliz Ulusal Arşivi, XI. yüzyılın son çeyreğine kadar giden ilk arşiv belgesi ile dünyanın en kapsamlı ve büyük arşivlerinden biri belki de en büyüğüdür. Arşiv binasının Londra’da olması araştırmacılara araştıracakları konuları rahatlıkla bulabilme fırsatı oluşturmaktadır. Benzer bir fırsat hem İngiliz Coğrafya Topluluğu’nun hem de İngiliz Milli Kütüphane’nin arşivi için de geçerli bir durumdur. Yalnız burada birbirinden farklı işleyişler, olanaklar ve sınırlılıklar mevcuttur. İngiliz Ulusal Arşivi’nin devletin resmî yazışmalarını bünyesinde barındırması, Kraliyet Coğrafya Topluluğu’nun seyyahların gözlemlerini bünyesinde toplaması ve İngiliz Milli Kütüphanesi’nde el yazmaları başta olmak üzere nadide pek çok kitaba yer verilmesi İngiliz arşivlerini benzerlerinden ayıran temel özelliklerdir. Yalnız söz konusu kurumların her birinin kendine özgü çalışma koşulları mevcuttur. Bu nedenle makale, İngiliz arşivlerinde gerçekleştirilecek olan bir araştırmanın olanaklarını, sınırlılıklarını Türkiye dosyaları üzerinden değerlendirme iddiasındadır. Diğer arşivler ise kendi konumları itibariyle genel bir değerlendirmeye tabi tutulmuştur.

Possibilities and Limitations of the British Archives in the Study of Recent Turkey

Öz

The fact that human beings are in a search between the past and the future should be considered as a product of an effort to understand where they come from and where they are going. In the past part of this endeavor, archives have an indispensable importance for all humanity. In order to contribute to the awareness of this importance, the study aims to examine the The National Archives, Royal Geographical Society Archives and British Library Archives in the context of possibilities and limitations. The National Archives is one of the most comprehensive and largest archives in the world, perhaps the largest, with the first archival document dating back to the last quarter of the eleventh century. The fact that the archive building is located in London creates an opportunity for researchers to easily find the subjects they want to research. A similar opportunity exists for the archives of both the Royal Geographical Society and British Library. But there are also different processes, opportunities and limitations. The fact that the The National Archives contains the official correspondence of the state, Royal Geographical Society collects the observations of travelers, and British Library contains many rare books, especially manuscripts, are the main features that distinguish British archives from their peers. However, each of these institutions has its own unique working conditions. For this reason, the article claims to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of a research to be conducted in the British archives through the Turkish files. Other archives are subjected to a general evaluation in terms of their own positions.
