Developing Performance Descriptors for Turkish as a Foreign Language Teaching: Basic and Independent Levels

Compared to its increasing significance and number of students, studies on describing learner performance in Turkish as a Foreign Language have been limited. With this respect, the current study aims to develop descriptors defining the performance of learners in different areas of the target language. After reviewing models in the relevant literature, opinions of foreign language, curriculum, and assessment and evaluation experts were collected. Data were analyzed through translation-back translation, congruence analysis, and content validity ratio and indexes. Findings yielded a total of 319 descriptors in basic (A1 and A2) and independent (B1 and B2) levels in aural and visual reception and written and spoken production and interaction. The descriptors are expected to guide the curriculum and assessment and evaluation studies in the field and to be used in reflecting the language skills of adult learners of Turkish as a Foreign Language.

Yabancı Dil Olarak Türkçe Öğretiminde Performans Betimleyicileri Geliştirme: Temel ve Ara Düzeyler

Öz

Giderek artan önemi ve öğrenci sayısına kıyasla, yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretimi alanında öğrenici performanslarını betimlemeye yönelik çalışmalar sınırlı sayıda kalmıştır. Bu doğrultuda, mevcut çalışma öğrencilerin hedef dilin çeşitli alanlarındaki performanslarını tanımlama özelliği taşıyan betimleyicileri geliştirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Nitel bir yaklaşım ile tasarlanan bu araştırmada uluslararası alanyazında örnek teşkil edebilecek dokümanların incelenmesinin ardından yabancı dil, program geliştirme ve ölçme ve değerlendirme uzmanlarının görüşleri alınmıştır. Çeviri-geri çeviri, uyuşum yüzdelikleri ve kapsam geçerlik oranı ve indeksleri aracılıklarıyla veriler çözümlenmiştir. Çalışmalar neticesinde temel (A1 ve A2) ve ara düzeylerde (B1 ve B2) işitsel ve görsel alımlama ile birlikte sözlü ve yazılı üretim ve etkileşim alanlarında toplam 319 betimleyici geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen betimleyicilerin ilgili alandaki program geliştirme ve ölçme ve değerlendirme çalışmalarına öncülük etmesi ve özellikle yetişkin öğrencilerin yabancı dil olarak Türkçe becerilerini yansıtmada kullanılması beklenmektedir.
