The Turkish textile and clothing industry is a key sector in the country both in terms of its dimensions within the domestic economy and because of its approximately 30 %share in total exports. While it constituted a relatively smallerpart within the sector's exports at the beginning of the 1990's, clothing has now become the mqjor item. This change has been accompanied with a shift towards higher value added goods, thus compansatingpartly for the restrictions brought about through quotas imposed by the EC and the US. Adding to these factors, the fact that Turkey's textile and clothingproduction covers a relatively wide range of goods including man made fibers and that cotton will continue to provide a significant advantage, it becomes apperant that Turkey's competivity in this sector, is to be reckoned with However, despite some limited new investments dllring the 19903, this competitivity has relied heavily on cheap labour and the Turkish textile and clothing sector has not achieved its much needed technological upgrading.
