The Relationship Between Alarm Fatigue and Clinical Decision Making in Intensive Care Nurses: The Case of a University Hospital

Öz

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between alarm fatigue and clinical decision making in intensive care nurses.
Materials and Method: This study was designed as a descriptive and correlational study. The study was completed with the participation of 72 intensive care nurses who met the inclusion criteria in a university hospital. “Descriptive Characteristics Form”, “Alarm Fatigue Scale” and “Clinical Decision Making Scale in Nursing (CDMNS)” prepared by the researchers were used as data collection tools.
Results: In our study, the mean score of the participants on the Alarm Fatigue Scale was moderate (19.33±5.90) and the alarm fatigue scores increased as the duration of professional experience and intensive care experience increased. The mean total score of the participants in the CDMNS was at the middle-upper level (130.58±10.33). In the study, it was determined that there was a positive correlation between the Alarm Fatigue Scale and the CDMNS scores, but this relationship was not statistically significant (r=0.230, p=0.052).
Conclusion: In order to reduce alarm fatigue, awareness among experienced nurses should be increased and alarm management trainings should be disseminated. Future intervention studies to be planned with the data obtained from the study are expected to guide institutional policies to increase patient safety and contribute to the quality of care provided by nurses.

Yoğun bakım hemşirelerinde alarm yorgunluğu ve klinik karar verme arasındaki ilişki: Bir üniversite hastanesi örneği

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, yoğun bakım hemşirelerinde alarm yorgunluğu ve klinik karar verme arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu çalışma, tanımlayıcı ve ilişki arayıcı tipte tasarlanmıştır. Araştırma, bir üniversite hastanesinde dahil edilme kriterlerini karşılayan 72 yoğun bakım hemşiresinin katılımıyla tamamlanmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak, araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan “Tanıtıcı Özellikler Formu”, “Alarm Yorgunluk Ölçeği” ve “Hemşirelikte Klinik Karar Verme Ölçeği (HKKVÖ)” kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Çalışmamızda katılımcıların Alarm Yorgunluk Ölçeği puan ortalaması orta düzeyde (19,33 ± 5,90) olup mesleki deneyim süresi ve yoğun bakım deneyimi arttıkça alarm yorgunluğu puanları yükselmektedir. Katılımcıların HKKVÖ toplam puan ortalaması ise orta-üst düzeydedir (130,58 ± 10,33). Araştırmada, Alarm Yorgunluk Ölçeği ile HKKVÖ puanları arasında pozitif yönde bir ilişki olduğu, ancak bu ilişkinin istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmadığı tespit edilmiştir (r = 0,230, p = 0,052).
Sonuç: Alarm yorgunluğunu azaltmak için deneyimli hemşireler arasında farkındalık artırılmalı ve alarm yönetimi eğitimleri yaygınlaştırılmalıdır. Araştırmadan elde edilen verilerle ileriye dönük planlanacak müdahale çalışmalarının hasta güvenliğini artırmaya yönelik kurum politikalarına yol gösterici olması ve hemşirelerin sunmuş oldukları bakımın kalitesine katkı sağlaması beklenmektedir.
