SPACE, SOCIETY, AND PEOPLE IN AKAD'S FOUR SEASONS OF ISTANBUL
Öz
This article focuses on the socio-spatial and aesthetic dimensions of Four Seasons in Istanbul (Dört Mevsim İstanbul, 1990), a four-part documentary and docu-drama series produced for TRT as Lütfi Ömer Akad's final work. While the first episode, titled Birth (Doğuş), explores the tradition of 'city symphonies', the remaining three episodes — titled Istanbul is a Song (İstanbul Bir Şarkıdır), Istanbul is a Longing (İstanbul Bir Özlemdir), and Istanbul is a Fight (İstanbul Bir Kavgadır) — are docu-dramas that incorporate a fictional narrative into the documentary. The article discusses the cinematic representation of Istanbul within the context of how documentaries construct the historical and social world of the period. Drawing from Baker’s proposition that documentary cinema can be used as an analytical tool in the sociology of emotions and the production of social types, rather than relying on traditional social sciences, the article aims to decipher the urban and social types Akad created for Istanbul. Within a qualitative research framework, the article presents a methodological triangulation model integrating content analysis, Barthes' visual semiotics approach, Ryan and Kellner's political deconstructive cinema theory and Baker's social type and affect approach. Akad’s approach to Istanbul was discussed as a discursive practice centred on images, representations, and ideologies. Drawing on Williams's theoretical framework, which defines ideology as 'the general process of producing meanings and ideas', the article ultimately reveals that Four Seasons in Istanbul challenges the spatial violence and destruction of memory caused by urban transformation. It does this by transmitting the spirit of the city and its social groups to future generations, acting as a powerful counter-archive constructed with a high level of sociological intuition, human testimony and silent protest.

AKAD’IN DÖRT MEVSİM İSTANBUL’UNDA MEKAN, TOPLUM VE İNSAN
