AN EXAMPLE OF A DIJITAL DISEASE: CAUSES OF THE “ZOOM” FATIGUE AND ITS EFFECTS ON EMPLOYEES

In recent years, researchers have predicted that video meeting technology will disrupt the daily work practice and change the way people socialize. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic caused an effective increase in the number of video meetings; furthermore, “Zoom” has become mainstream software because it's free and easy to use. While its software is an essential tool for productivity, learning, and social interaction, being in a video meeting all day is tiring and has made the term ““Zoom” Fatigue” popular. Within this article, possible causes of “Zoom” fatigue and four arguments that determine various aspects of the psychological, social and physiological consequences that the current “Zoom” interface is likely to cause are focused on. These arguments are based on academic theory and research. In this study, “Zoom” fatigue conditions of 16 employees using “Zoom” are also examined by in-depth interviews. For this purpose, 8 female and 8 male employees frequently using “Zoom” platform for both business and private meetings are interviewed. During the interview, information obtained about the thoughts of the people through “Zoom” and the frequency of their use of the platform, and their opinions on “Zoom” fatigue are consulted.
