The role of tourism in women’s struggle against multidimensional poverty: The Cittaslow experience of Köyceğiz

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of tourism development on the multidimensional poverty of women in the Köyceğiz district. Structured within the framework of Amartya Sen’s multidimensional poverty approach, the research analyzes changes in women’s economic, social, and subjective dimensions. The study was conducted using a multiple qualitative research design, involving semi-structured interviews with 23 female participants and field diaries based on the researcher's observations. The data were analyzed using content analysis and triangulation methods. The findings reveal that tourism increases women’s participation in the economy, enhances their incomes, strengthens their social visibility, and improves life satisfaction. Additionally, tourism was found to expand women's social networks through increased cultural interaction and contribute positively to their subjective poverty.
