Experiences Of Older Adults in Türkiye Regarding The Impacts Of Climate Change: A Review in The Local Context

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 5 Sayı: 2, 151 - 163

Öz

Climate change has widespread impacts on society and creates significant vulnerabilities for older adults in biological, psychological, and social dimensions. Rising temperatures, droughts, floods, air pollution, environmental changes, and social isolation increase the vulnerability of older individuals in terms of health, social support systems, and economic resources. Chronic health issues, limited mobility, weakened immune systems, inadequate social support mechanisms, and economic hardships further challenge older individuals’ ability to cope with climate change. Limited field studies in Turkey reveal that older adults lack sufficient mechanisms to address the challenges posed by climate change. However, the focus of these studies on specific regions limits the understanding of experiential diversity across different local contexts. Future field research in various regions of Turkey could provide a more comprehensive understanding of how climate change affects older adults. Furthermore, raising awareness among older individuals about climate change, adapting their housing to climate conditions, and developing effective policies through collaboration among relevant institutions are essential to safeguarding their quality of life.
