Authenticity In Writing Activities In TFL Course Books:A Comparative Study On Writing Activities In Yeni Hitit And Istanbul Turkish Coursebooks For Foreigners 2

Abstract

Being considered the most difficult skill in language learning, writing requires learners to have a great deal of lexical and syntactic knowledge as well as principles of organization in L2 to produce a well-established writing. Real writing or authentic writing which means to write for real purposes and real audiences that occur in daily life includes a variety of writing styles, purposes, audiences, contexts, and products. To achieve this goal, learners need to have a certain amount of L2 background knowledge about the rhetorical organizations, appropriate language use or specific lexicon with which they want to communicate to their readers (Tangpermpoon, 2008). Moreover, when compared with other fundamental skills such as listening, speaking, and reading, it is difficult to handle this case if teachers are unaware of realizing learners’ interest for a real reason to write. Recent studies indicate that course books are among the most important materials for foreign language instruction and they should consist of well-thought authentic writing activities (Yılmaz, 2014). The more coursebooks include authentic writing activities the more it becomes meaningful and pleasurable for learners to develop their skills. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate of the writing activities in terms of the authenticity in two coursebooks teaching Turkish as a foreing language (TFL). Two books-Yeni Hitit Turkish 2 (YH2) and Istanbul Turkish for Foreigners (IT2) were examined to set out a comparative study in this field. Findings have suggested that although some writing activities are compatible with the idea of purposeful activity in authenticity, still most activities need to be updated in being applied for the criterias of Common European Framework.
