The Visibility of Climate Change Policies on University Websites: A Comparative Assessment on a Global Scale
Abstract
Climate change is an issue where the level of awareness and consciousness of individuals is very important and requires the implementation of transparent and accessible policies. However, universities have the potential to raise awareness and develop policies, especially through their websites. As institutions with the potential to guide the society, it is very important for universities to display their climate change policies more openly and accessibly on their websites. As a matter of fact, it has been observed that there is a research gap in the literature on this subject. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the visibility of climate change policies on university websites. For this purpose, comparative content analysis was utilized in the study designed with qualitative research design. The websites of the universities in the countries included in the study (Turkey, the Netherlands, the UK and Germany) were examined and evaluated according to predetermined criteria on climate change policies. With these evaluations, it was concluded that the websites of the universities included in the research have a high level of climate change policy visibility in general, although there are some differences between countries. While Istanbul Technical University from Turkey has the highest visibility, when compared across countries, it is found that universities in Turkey is at a relatively lower level compared to other countries. Universities in Germany and the Netherlands were found to have a balanced performance, but lagged behind universities in the UK. It was also revealed that university websites are used as a strong resource and information center on climate change, but they do not have sufficient visibility in the field of public information and awareness campaigns. It is recommended that universities, being aware of their role in combating and adapting to climate change, should take international good practices as examples and pay attention to the visibility of climate change policies on their websites. Future researchers are recommended to conduct similar research in different time periods, methodologies, countries and universities.
