Foreign language interactions are increasingly occurring in environments comprising individuals from a variety of language and cultural backgrounds, both domestically and internationally. The fact that individuals who use foreign languages have one or more languages in their linguistic repertoires directly affects the process of activating their other languages while using one specific language. This study aims to investigate the translanguaging processes of higher education students studying in the department of Translation and Interpreting for making lexical searches while translating from written texts. The study data were collected using think-aloud protocols during the verbal translation of a short story from Turkish to English. Data were analyzed using the Categorization Model for Specific Purposes of Murphy and Roca de Larios (2010), and the processes by which students activated their mother tongue, Turkish, and the target language, English, while translating from a written text were examined. The study's findings indicated that individuals who are proficient in English, adequate for study at the Department of Translation and Interpreting, mostly employ their native language in cognitive processes. It was found that the participants predominantly utilized Turkish in their cognitive processes, self-dialogue, and internal reflections.
