WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION AND POSTCOLONIAL DISCOURSE IN THE TURKISH TRANSLATION OF LA FEMME SANS SÉPULTURE
Öz
Colonialism refers to the political, economic, and cultural domination of a weaker state, society, or region by a more powerful state. Postcolonialism, in turn, is a broad academic and theoretical field that critically examines the legacies of colonialism and imperialism, as well as their continuing effects in the contemporary world. This study examines Assia Djebar’s La Femme Sans Sépulture and its Turkish translation, Mezarı Olmayan Kadın (The Woman Without a Grave), in relation to postcolonial discourse, the translation of that discourse, and the ways women’s representation is preserved, transformed, or reframed in translation. The analysis does not evaluate translation in terms of right or wrong choices; rather, it focuses on whether the represented image is preserved and whether the tension of postcolonial discourse remains visible or becomes obscured in the target text. The chosen examples in this study were treated under four representative patterns: The Image of Assimilation and Civilization; Mimicry and the Image of Corporeal Performance; Colonial Labor Regime and The Disciplined Image of the Body; and, finally, The Subject of Resistance as Counter-Image and Images of the Witnessing Woman. The study shows that translation not only conveys meaning in postcolonial texts but also reshapes women’s representation and visibility.
