Integration of Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Translation Training: A Comparative Analysis of Turkish and International Curricula

Öz

The growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology in the translation industry has shifted
market expectations. However, an analysis of undergraduate translation curricula in Turkish universities
reveals that these changes have not yet been fully integrated into course curricula. One major challenge is
that the perception of translation and interpreting is often considered to be disciplines that require merely
linguistic skill rather than technological expertise in specialized scientific domains. Artificial intelligence
and technology-focused approaches such as machine translation (MT), computer-assisted translation (CAT)
tools, and natural language processing (NLP) are not sufficiently included among several translation and
interpreting undergraduate programs in Türkiye. Undergraduate translation programs in Turkish universities
are experiencing challenges in training translators who can fulfill the expectations of the global market as
they strive to keep up with the growing demands of a technology-driven industry. This research investigates
the extent to which technology and AI have been integrated into undergraduate translation programs in
Türkiye through a comparative analysis of curricula from leading international universities. The research
highlights potential deficiencies in training graduates for career opportunities using both market and
academic frameworks by analyzing how effectively current Turkish curricula fulfill market expectations.
Based on the findings, the research also proposes several recommendations for enhancing the integration of
technology and AI into translation training. These recommendations mainly include curriculum
modifications to introduce technology and AI-oriented courses, organizing training programs in CAT tools
and machine translation post-editing (MTPE), and fostering collaborations with the industry.

Öz

Çeviri sektöründe yapay zekâ (AI) ve teknolojinin giderek daha fazla benimsenmesi, piyasa
beklentilerinde değişimlere sebebiyet vermiştir. Ancak Türkiye’deki üniversitelerin çeviri lisans
programlarının müfredat analizi yapıldığında söz konusu değişimlerin ders izlencelerine henüz tam
anlamıyla entegre edilemediği gözlemlenmektedir. Yazılı ve sözlü çevirinin teknolojik uzmanlık
gerektiren bilimsel alanlardan ziyade salt sözel yetkinlik gerektiren alanlar olarak algılanması başlıca
problemler arasında yer almaktadır. Dolayısıyla, Türkiye’deki pek çok mütercim ve tercümanlık lisans
bölümü müfredatı, makine çevirisi (MT), bilgisayar destekli çeviri araçları (CAT) ve doğal dil işleme
(NLP) gibi yapay zekâ ve teknoloji odaklı araçları yeterince içermemektedir. Çeviri sektörünün gelişen
teknolojiyle eşgüdümlü olarak artan güncel taleplerini karşılama noktasında yetersiz kalabilen lisans
bölümü müfredatları, küreselleşen pazarın ihtiyaçlarını karşılayabilecek donanımlı çevirmenlerin
yetiştirilme süreçlerini de akamete uğratabilmektedir. Bu çalışma, teknoloji ve yapay zekânın
Türkiye’deki çeviri lisans programlarına ne ölçüde dâhil edildiğini önde gelen uluslararası kurumların
müfredatlarıyla karşılaştırmalı olarak ele almakta; mevcut müfredatlarla sektörün beklentilerini
değerlendirerek öğrencilerin iş hayatına hazırlık süreçlerinin potansiyel zayıflıklarını piyasa ve akademik
altyapı üzerinden incelemektedir. Elde edilen bulgulara dayanarak, teknoloji ve yapay zekanın çeviri
eğitimine entegrasyonunu güçlendirmek adına bir takım öneriler de getirilmektedir. İrdelenecek öneriler
arasında teknoloji ve yapay zekâ odaklı dersler içerecek müfredat değişiklikleri, CAT araçları ve MTPE
alanında kursların düzenlenmesi ve sektör iş birliklerinin teşvik edilmesi de yer almaktadır.

Bu çalışma, İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi İngilizce Mütercim ve Tercümanlık öğrencileri tarafından gerçekleştirilmiş ve 27 Şubat 2025 tarihinde Sakarya Üniversitesi tarafından düzenlenen "Çeviride Yapay Zeka ve Sürdürülebilirlik" isimli çalıştayda bildiri olarak sunulmuştur.
