Öz

Bu çalışma, Değişken İkame Esnekliği (VSE) üretim fonksiyonunun esnek çerçevesini kullanarak sermaye ve işgücü arasındaki ikame esnekliğini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada esneklik katsayısının tahmininde, her gelir düzeyiyle ilişkili farklı amortisman oranlarını dikkate almak amacıyla ülkeler yüksek, orta ve düşük gelirli olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Çalışmanın yöntemi, 1994-2019 dönemine ait 118 ülkenin yıllık verilerinin kullanıldığı VES (Variable Elasticity of Substitution) üretim fonksiyonunun tahminine dayanmaktadır. Çalışmanın bulguları, değişken ikame esnekliği parametresinin (b) tüm modellerde negatif ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu sonuç, ikame esnekliğinin tüm gelir grupları için birden küçük olduğunu ve sermaye-emek oranına bağlı olarak değiştiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca, bu bulgular, geleneksel Cobb-Douglas ve CES üretim fonksiyonlarının birim esneklik varsayımını sorgulamakta ve ekonomik büyüme çalışmalarında ve politika analizlerinde ikame esnekliğinin dinamik doğasını dikkate almanın önemini vurgulamaktadır. Bu kapsamda, ilgili araştırmalarda kullanılabilecek ülkelere özgü ikame esnekliği verileri de hesaplanmıştır.

CAPITAL-LABOR ELASTICITY OF SUBSTITUTION ACROSS INCOME GROUPS: EVIDENCE FROM THE VARIABLE ELASTICITY OF SUBSTITUTION PRODUCTION FUNCTION

Öz

This study aims to examine the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor using the flexible framework of the Variable Substitution Elasticity (VSE) production function. Countries were classified as high, middle, or low income to account for the different depreciation rates associated with each income level when estimating elasticities. The methodology of the study is based on estimating the VES production function using annual data from 118 countries covering the period 1994-2019. The findings of the study indicate that the variable elasticity of substitution parameter (b) is negative and statistically significant in all models. This result shows that the elasticity of substitution is less than one for all income groups and varies depending on the capital-labor ratio. Furthermore, these findings challenge the unit elasticity assumption of traditional Cobb-Douglas and CES production functions and emphasize the importance of considering the dynamic nature of the elasticity of substitution in economic growth studies and policy analyses. In this context, country-specific elasticity of substitution estimates that can be used in related research are also provided.
