Examining motivation of teacher candidates to become a teacher

Öz

Aim: The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between motivation levels and other aspects of students in Physical Education and Sports Teaching undergraduate program.

Material and Methods: The study was conducted with a total of 203 students, 77 females and 126 males, studying at Physical Education and Sports Teaching undergraduate program of Karadeniz Technical University. In the present study, “Academic Motivation Scale” whose validity and reliability tests were conducted on university students and which was developed by Cocley, Bernard et al. under the scope of the study titled “A Psychometric Investigation of the Academic Motivation Scale Using a United States Sample” and “Personal Information Form” developed by the researcher to determine students’ demographic features were used for data collection. Independent-Samples t test and One-Way ANOVA statistical analysis methods were used to determine whether there is a difference between motivation levels.

Results: At the end of the study, it was found out that there is a significant difference, at P<0,05, between motivation levels of Physical Education and Sports Teaching students and grades, types of schools graduated and housing conditions. It was also determined that there are no significant differences, at p<0,05, between motivation levels of students and age, income level and scholarship status.

Conclusion: Male and female students undergo a same process from basis to professional they live the same mood and events. Not only male and female physical education teachers show similarity with regard to Sports life, training tempo, intensive camping period, physical requirements and dietary habits but also it can be suggested that they can be motivated to their profession without gender gap. On the other hand, it can also be suggested that in parallel with social and technological developments;  diminishing social status difference between males and females and females take much more roles in business life and social life.
