Haber Videolarında ‘YouTube’ Yorumlarının Kamusal Alan Fonksiyonu: Bir Tematik Analiz Denemesi

Öz

Bu çalışma, dijital bir kamusal alan olarak değerlendirilebilecek YouTube yorumlarının, haber içeriklerinden bağımsız olarak hangi temalar etrafında şekillendiğini ve kamusal alan işlevi potansiyelini analiz etmektedir. Araştırma, BBC News tarafından yayımlanan "Turkey Turns 100: A Future Global Power?" başlıklı videoya yapılan 1.768 yorumu içermektedir. İçerik analizi ve tematik analiz yöntemleri kullanılarak, yorumlar arasındaki temel temalar, katılımcıların siyasi ve kültürel algıları ile ulusal ve uluslararası söylemler arasındaki dinamikler incelenmiştir. Analiz sonuçları, yorumların geniş bir yelpazede çeşitlilik gösterdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Türkiye’nin tarihî mirası ve kültürel bağları bazı yorumlarda övgüyle vurgulanırken; mevcut hükümet, ekonomik sorunlar ve uluslararası politikaların eleştirilerin merkezinde yer aldığı görülmektedir. Aynı zamanda, tarihsel tartışmalar (örneğin, Ermeni soykırımı iddiaları ve Kıbrıs meselesi) ile Türkiye’nin bölgesel liderlik rolü sıklıkla tekrar edilmektedir. İngilizce yorumlar daha kapsayıcı ve uluslararası konulara odaklanırken, Türkçe yorumlar genellikle iç politika ve ekonomik durum ekseninde şekillenmektedir. Çalışma, dijital platformlarda kamuoyunun çok yönlü yapısını görünür kılmayı amaçlamakta ve YouTube yorumlarının, siyasi söylem ve kültürel etkileşim açısından nasıl bir kamusal alan işlevi gördüğünü tartışmaktadır. Bulgular, dijital platformların, yalnızca bilgi paylaşımı değil, aynı zamanda eleştirel ve katılımcı söylemin bir aracı olarak potansiyelini vurgulamaktadır.

The Public Sphere Function of ‘YouTube’ Comments on News Videos: A Thematic Analysis

This study analyses the themes around which YouTube comments, which can be considered as a digital public sphere, are shaped independently of news content and their potential as a public sphere function. The study includes 1,768 comments on the video titled ‘Turkey Turns 100: A Future Global Power?’ published by BBC News. Content analysis and thematic analysis methods were used to analyze the main themes among the comments, the political and cultural perceptions of the participants, and the dynamics between national and international discourses. The results of the analyses reveal a wide range of diversity in the comments. While Türkiye’s historical heritage and cultural ties are praised in some comments, the current government, economic problems and international policies are at the center of criticism. At the same time, historical debates (e.g. the Armenian genocide allegations and the Cyprus issue) and Türkiye’s regional leadership role are often repeated. While English comments are more inclusive and focused on international issues, Turkish comments are often centered on domestic politics and the economic situation. The study aims to make visible the multifaceted nature of public opinion on digital platforms and discusses how YouTube comments function as a public space for political discourse and cultural interaction. The findings emphasize the potential of digital platforms not only for information sharing but also as a tool for critical and participatory discourse.
