Nefertem ve Şesemu’nun İzinde Eski Mısır’da Parfüm, Koku ve Tütsünün Tanrısal ve Sosyal Boyutları

Öz

Eski Mısır medeniyetinde koku, sıradan bir duyusal deneyimin ötesinde; ilahi varlığın somut bir tezahürü, tapınak ritüellerinin vazgeçilmez bir unsuru, tıbbi uygulamaların işlevsel bir bileşeni ve belki de Eski Mısırlılar için en önemli şeylerden olan ölüm sonrası yaşamın güvencesi olarak düşünülmüştür. Bu çalışma, “tanrılaştıran” anlamına gelen senetjer kavramından hareketle tütsü ve parfümün dini, tıbbi, toplumsal ve ekonomik işlevlerini bütüncül bir perspektifle ele almaktadır. Makalede önce kokunun teolojik zemini, tanrıların kokulu varlıklar olarak tasavvuru ve Nefertem ile Hathor’un bu çerçevedeki konumu ele alınmıştır. Ardından ise günlük sunu ritüelinde tütsünün dört aşamalı işlevi, “Horus’un Gözü” formülü ve Şesemu’nun yönetimindeki tapınaktaki bir çeşit parfüm atölyesi ile Edfu’daki kitabe halinde korunmuş olan reçeteler incelenmektedir. Tütsünün tıbbi boyutu, tütsüleme uygulamaları ve aromatik reçinelerin papirüslerde tarif edilen kullanımı üzerinden ele alınmakta; gündelik hayatta parfüm üretim teknikleri ile ziyafetlerdeki parfümlü koni ve nilüfer geleneği değerlendirilmektedir. Festival ve cenaze ritüellerinde kokunun ölümsüzlüğü sağlayan dönüştürücü rolünün ardından, Punt ve Byblos seferleriyle yoğunluk kazanan tütsü-mür ticaretinin Eski Krallık’tan Yeni Krallık’a uzanan ekonomik ve siyasi boyutları ele alınmaktadır. Çalışma, kokunun Eski Mısır’da insanı, tanrıyı ve ölüyü birbirine bağlayan görünmez bir dil olarak işlediğini; aynı zamanda ekonomiyi ve dış politikayı biçimlendiren bir güç olarak kavrandığını ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.

Tracing in the Footsteps of Nefertem and Shesemu: The Divine and Social Dimensions of Perfume, Scent, and Incense in Ancient Egypt

Öz

In ancient Egyptian civilization, scent was conceived far beyond a mere sensory experience; it was perceived as a tangible manifestation of divine presence, an indispensable element of temple rituals, a functional component of medical practices, and a guarantee for the afterlife, one of the most paramount concerns for the ancient Egyptians. Drawing upon the concept of senetjer, which literally translates to "that which makes divine," this study comprehensively examines the religious, medical, social, and economic functions of incense and perfume through a holistic perspective. The paper first explores the theological foundation of scent, the conceptualization of deities as aromatic entities, and the specific roles of Nefertem and Hathor within this framework. Subsequently, it analyzes the four-stage function of incense in daily offering rituals, the "Eye of Horus" formula, the temple perfume laboratories supervised by Shezmu, and the recipes preserved as inscriptions at Edfu. The medicinal dimension of incense is evaluated through fumigation practices and the application of aromatic resins as prescribed in medical papyri, while daily perfume production techniques and the tradition of using perfumed cones and lotuses at banquets are also examined. Following an investigation into the transformative role of scent in securing immortality during festival and funerary rituals, the study addresses the economic and political dimensions of the incense and myrrh trade, which intensified through expeditions to Punt and Byblos, spanning from the Old Kingdom to the New Kingdom. Ultimately, this study aims to demonstrate that scent operated as an invisible language connecting humans, deities, and the deceased in ancient Egypt, while simultaneously functioning as a pivotal force that shaped both the economy and foreign policy.
