QUESTIONING THE PRODUCTION SUCCESS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: INNOVATION, AUTOMATION, DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
Abstract
Purpose: The production success of an industry is related to how efficiently it can transform its resources and add value to its participants in terms of cost, time, quality, and scope. Despite its global importance and scale, the construction industry underperforms in productivity compared to general averages. This study questions the reasons for this issue regarding the peculiarities of the industry. In this context; how successfully the construction industry can carry out its production compared to other industries, what kind of innovative developments have been experienced in the last century to increase the level of success, and why these developments are insufficient to provide solutions at the desired level are examined.
Methodology: A critical examination is conducted in this study.
Findings: Complex and unique nature of the construction industry results in a decentralized and fragmented production mechanism and also hinders the development and adaptation of innovative concepts such as robotics and digitalization. In order to increase the level of success, innovative developments specific to the construction industry should be handled with a radical and holistic approach.
Originality: The study contributes to the construction innovation literature.
