Surgical Treatment of Cervical Mucocele in a Dog
Abstract
Mucocele, which is also known as salivarycyst, is an accumulation of saliva in soft tissues because of arupture of salivary gland or duct. Saliva takes the path of lessresistance place and free saliva causes granulation tissue inresponse to inflammation and the granulation tissue preventsfurther migration of saliva. A mix breed-male dog whichpresented swelling at the side of ventral intermandibular region, when it’s about 6 months old, formed the material of the study. At the beginning, the swelling was slightly painful. However,it became painless when it got bigger. Examining the animalin dorsal recumbency allowed the mucocele to gravitate tothe right side of midline, thus the right salivary gland systemwas determined as affected side. Treatment was achieved withexcision of mandibular and sublingual salivary glands at theaffected side, when the case was 8 months old. In postoperativefollow up examinations, no recurrence was observed
