In the traditional way of life, the elderly used to have a great value in the family and society. All family members used to respect the elderly, satisfy their needs, and serve them. Today, in a modern nuclear family, needs of elderly, which especially include health and social care needs, are increasingly covered by governmental agencies. Importance and social status of the elderly in family have decreased with the changes in family life structures. Together with the changes in the family structures, elderly people and their children started to live far away from each other. While the young generation of rural origin continues to live in urban areas, their parents mostly live in the rural areas. In the urban environment, since women and men primarily participate in working life together, also because of the differences in space, changes in the understanding of value for family unity etc. depending on the relative effects of the causes, the younger members of the family are unable to help the elderly in need of care, and the elderly increasingly receive support from governmental agencies. In the study, challenges of elderly people, changing family structure and the factors that influence this change, the evaluations for elderly people in social change, family role and support in elderly care, assistance of economic support systems and modern corporate structures for the elderly services are explained with the help of findings from stratified sampling of the elderly people from rural population in Zonguldak city center and adjacent areas.
