The Uncanny Feeling in Doris Lessing’s The Fifth Child

This article titled “The Uncanny Feeling in Doris Lessing's The Fifth Child” focuses on the life of the Lovatt family, which is haunted by the uncanny feeling after the birth of their fifth child. David and Harriet Lovatt's fifth child, named Ben, is different from other people for a reason not explained in the novel. Although not explicitly stated, it is implied that this difference occurs because of a genetic deviation which has activated genes belonging to the most primitive periods of humans. This genetic deviation has caused Ben to be noticeably ugly although he has no obvious physical anomaly. In addition, he is psychologically and cognitively impaired. The difference in Ben is felt starting from the pregnancy period, even when it is still a fetus. Ben is a very active and strong baby and during the pregnancy and Harriet begins to see him as her enemy. The uncanny effect occurs in the pregnancy period and spreads to anyone who meets Ben after his birth. Throughout the novel, Ben is referred to with evil words such as "demon", "freak", "monster" and "enemy". No expert can clearly explain the situation in Ben. He scares everyone with his physical appearance and behavior, he causes terror and makes people uneasy for some unexplained reasons. His situation remains a mystery and no one can offer a reasonable explanation. In this article, all of these will be examined by referring to Sigmund Freud’s theory of the uncanny.

Doris Lessing’ın Beşinci Çocuk Romanında “Tekinsizlik” Hissi

Öz

“Doris Lessing’in Beşinci Çocuk Romanında ‘Tekinsizlik’ Hissi” başlıklı bu makalede beşinci çocuklarının doğumu ile tekinsiz etki altına giren Lovatt ailesinin yaşantısına odaklanılacaktır. David ve Harriet Lovatt’ın Ben adındaki beşinci çocukları, kardeşlerinin aksine romanda açıklanmayan bir sebepten dolayı diğer insanlardan farklıdır. Çok açıktan söylenmese de bu farklılığın bir genetik sapma sonucu Ben’de insan ırkının en ilkel dönemlerine ait genlerin aktif olması ile oluştuğu ima edilir. Bu genetik sapma, fiziksel olarak çok göze çarpan bir anomalisi olmamasına rağmen Ben’in fark edilir derecede çirkin olmasına sebep olmuştur. Bunun yanı sıra, Ben psikolojik ve bilişsel olarak da geri durumdadır. Ben’deki farklılık hamilelik döneminden itibaren henüz fetüs halindeyken bile annesi tarafından çok kuvvetli bir şekilde hissedilir. Ben, fazlaca hareketli bir bebektir ve Harriet hamileyken dahi onu düşman olarak görmeye başlar. Tekinsiz etki hamilelik döneminden itibaren ortaya çıkar ve doğumu takiben Ben ile karşılaşan herkese sirayet eder. Roman boyunca Ben, “ecinni”, “ucube”, “canavar” ve “düşman” gibi kötücül kelimeler ile anılır. Alanında uzman hiç kimse Ben’deki durumu net bir şekilde açıklayamaz. Bu makalede, Ben’in dış görünüşü ve davranışlarıyla herkesi tedirgin etmesi, etrafına dehşet saçması, ondaki durumun net bir şekilde hiç kimse tarafından açıklanamaması, insan görünümünde olmasına rağmen kendisinden insan değilmiş gibi bahsedilmesi Sigmund Freud’un tekinsizlik kavramı ile ilişkilendirilerek açıklanacaktır.
