This study examined the relationships between reinforcement sensitivity systems, social media addiction, and maladaptive daydreaming. Furthermore, the mediating role of maladaptive daydreaming in the relationship between reinforcement sensitivity systems and social media addiction was examined. The sample consisted of 317 participants, 210 females (66.2%) and 107 males (33.8%), aged 18-63 (27.96±7.08). Data were collected using the Reinforcement Sensitivity Questionnaire, the Maladaptive Daydreaming Scale, and the Social Media Addiction Scale. It was found that the mean scores of the Behavioral Inhibition System (DIS) (d = 0.68), Flight (d = 0.93) and freeze (d = 0.84) sub-dimensions of the Reinforcement Sensitivity Questionnaire, as well as social media addiction, were statistically significantly higher in women than in men, and the mean score of the Fight (d = -0.25) sub-dimension was statistically significantly higher in men than in women. Mediation analysis revealed that maladaptive daydreaming mediated the relationship between the BIS, Flight, and Freeze subscales and social media addiction. It has been found that engaging in maladaptive daydreaming increases compulsive social media use by acting as a cognitive escape mechanism. These findings suggest that a better understanding of the mediating role of maladaptive daydreaming between reinforcement sensitivity and social media use may contribute to the development of clinical intervention programs to reduce excessive social media use.
