Dijitalde Yeniden Keşfedilmek: Sixto Rodriguez ve Dijital Medyada Kültürel Bellek Dönüşümü

Öz

Bu çalışma, dijital medya ekosistemlerinin kültürel belleğin oluşum ve dolaşım süreçlerinde nasıl dönüştürücü bir rol üstlendiğini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Örnek olay olarak Meksika asıllı Amerikalı müzisyen Sixto Rodriguez’in dijital medya aracılığıyla kültürel bellekte yeniden görünür hale gelişi ele alınmıştır. Çalışmada, Rodriguez’e dair medya ve haber içerikleri toplanarak sanatçının kariyer evreleri kronolojik olarak sunulmuş; bu belgeler Silvana Mandolessi’nin belleğin dijitalleşmesine ilişkin önerdiği dört kavramsal çerçeve doğrultusunda doküman analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. Rodriguez’in dijital temsili, arşiv yapılarının dönüşümü, anlatının parçalanması, algoritmaların seçici belleği ve anı nesnelerinin anı bileşimlerine evrilmesi başlıkları altında incelenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, dijital kültürel belleğin geçmişi muhafaza etmek işlevinin yanı sıra onu yeniden inşa eden, insan ve insan olmayan öznelerin ortak üretimine dayanan ve parçalı anlatıların çoklu temsiller aracılığıyla yeniden kurgulandığı bir yapıya dönüştüğü görülmektedir. Ayrıca, kültürel değerlerin artık yalnızca geleneksel medya otoriteleri tarafından değil, aynı zamanda dijital platformlar, yeni medya altyapıları, algoritmik sistemler ve kullanıcı etkileşimleri yoluyla da üretildiğini göstermektedir. Sixto Rodriguez vakasının, bu yapısal dönüşümün işleyiş biçimini anlamak açısından örnek teşkil ettiği düşünülmektedir.

Rediscovered in the Digital: Sixto Rodriguez and the Transformation of Cultural Memory in Digital Media

Öz

This study examines the transformative role of digital media ecosystems in shaping and circulating cultural memory, using the case of the reemergence of Mexican-American musician Sixto Rodriguez via social media. Media and news content about Rodriguez are collected; his career phases presented chronologically, and these documents are analyzed in the context of Silvana Mandolessi’s four conceptual frameworks on the digitalization of memory. Rodriguez’s digital representation was explored under four themes: the transformation of archival structures, the fragmentation of narrative, the selective memory of algorithms, and the shift from mnemonic objects to mnemonic assemblages. Findings reveal that digital cultural memory not only preserves the past but also reconstructs it, through the co-production of human and non-human agents. This also indicates that cultural values are no longer exclusively generated by traditional media authorities, but are increasingly shaped through digital platforms, emerging media infrastructures, algorithmic systems, and user interactions. Fragmented narratives are reconfigured via multiple representations, and the case of Sixto Rodriguez illustrates how digital media enables the dynamic reemergence of cultural memory within evolving technological and social contexts.
