THE EFFECTS OF SMOKING ADDICTION ON THE MUSICIAN PROFESSION: THE CASE OF TÜRKİYE

Abstract

Cigarette use and addiction are becoming increasingly widespread among musicians in Turkey. This situation can cause individuals to experience various occupational health problems. This research focuses on occupational problems caused by cigarette addiction among musicians. The research was conducted by administering semi-structured interviews to 58 musicians in Turkey who perform under various conditions and are addicted to smoking. The level of addiction was determined using the “FTND” Nicotine Dependence Test. The research was conducted with individuals with a high level of addiction (8+). Research themes are grouped under two categories: (1) Individuals' thoughts and habits regarding cigarette use, (2) occupational problems caused by cigarette addiction. Findings from the first category: Cigarette-addicted musicians smoke between 21 and 40 cigarettes per day (65%). The most important reasons for starting smoking are curiosity and peer pressure. They believe that smoking relieves stress and irritability. Findings from the second category: According to musicians, smoking causes breathing problems. It negatively affects oral and dental health. It can cause problems with the vocal cords. It can have negative effects on the muscular and nervous systems and can negatively affect work discipline. Smoking addiction negatively affects musicians' ability to perform vocally or with their instruments. Damage to the vocal cords and respiratory system in particular can cause significant health problems for musicians. It is recommended that musicians be better informed about the risks associated with smoking.
