Effects of growing media and IBA concentrations on rooting characteristics of Satureja thymbra L. cuttings

Öz

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effects of a variety of growing media [Perlite + Peat (2:1 v/v), Peat + Sand (1:1 v/v), and Perlite + Sand (1:1 v/v)] and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentrations [0 (control), 3000 ppm, and 6000 ppm] on the rooting characteristics of semi-hardwood cuttings of S. thymbra. Materials and Method: The experiment was conducted within a single season, with the rooting media forming the main plots and different IBA concentrations forming the subplots, which were arranged in a split-plot design with three replications, using 25 cuttings per replication, totaling 675 cuttings. At the end of the rooting period, rooting percentage, number of roots, root length, fresh and dry root weight, number of shoots, shoot length, shoot diameter, fresh and dry shoot weights were all measured. Results: The highest rooting percentage (58.66%) and root number (6.28) were obtained from the cuttings treated with 3000 ppm IBA and rooted in the Perlite + Peat medium. The effect of growing media on rooting characteristics was found to be statistically more dominant compared to IBA treatments (p<0.05 and p<0.01). Conclusion: The results suggest that proper medium and hormone combination can significantly enhance rooting in S. thymbra, an important Mediterranean medicinal plant.
