Effect of L-thyroxine therapy on bone mineral density in postmenopausal patients

Öz

Objective: to determine the effect of L-thyroxin therapy on bone mineral density in postmenopausal patients Materials and Methods: Fourhundredsixtyeight postmenopausal women were analysed in this study. Thyroid function tests and bone mineral density results were evaluated in all patients. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to BMD as normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic. Control group was consisted of 270 women who had normal BMD. The BMD results of 58 patients taking L-thyroxin therapy were compared with the control group. Results: We compared BMD results of patients who were taking L-tiroksin and the control group. Osteopeni and osteoporozis rates were similar in two groups and there were no significant difference. Conclusion: L-thyroxin therapy at physilogical doses has no effect on BMD in postmenopausal women.

Öz

Amaç: Postmenopozal dönemde L-tiroksin tedavisinin kemik 'mineral yoğunluğu (BMD) üzerindeki etkisini değerlendirmek Materyal ve Metod: Hastanemiz menopoz polikliniğine başvuran 468 olgu çalışmaya alındı.Tüm hastalarda tiroid fonksiyon testleri ve BMD sonuçları değerlendirildi. Hastalar BMD'ne göre normal, osteopeni ve osteoporoz olmak üzere üç gruba ayrıldı. BMD'si normal olan 270 olgu kontrol grubunu oluşturdu. L-tiroksin kullanan 58 hastanın sonuçları tedavi almayan olgularla karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: L-tiroksin kullanan hastalar ile tedavi almayan olguların BMD'leri değerlendirildiğinde her iki grup arasında osteopeni ve osteoporoz açısından anlamlı bir fark saptanmadı. Sonuç: Fizyolojik dozlarda L-tiroksin alan postmenopozal hastalarda kemik mineral yoğunluğu etkilenmemektedir.
