Gianfranco Santovito, Associate Professor in Physiology, Coordinates the research unit of Environmental Physiology and Experimental Zoology at the Department of Biology of the University of Padova.
For the past three decades, Gianfranco Santovito's groundbreaking research has not only deepened our understanding of the physiological responses of animals and unicellular organisms to environmental conditions that induce oxidative stress, but has also significantly influenced the molecular evolution of proteins involved in the antioxidant defence system. His work has left an indelible mark on environmental physiology and has reverberated across the scientific community.
Gianfranco Santovito's research journey demonstrates his unwavering commitment to collaboration. He has played a pivotal role in numerous national and international research grants, often spearheading the projects as the Principal Investigator. Currently, he is a Co-Investigator in the prestigious research project funded by the European Commission, PNR Programme 2021-2027 – RETURN: multi-Risk sciEnce for resilienT commUnities undeR a changiNg climate. His dedication to collaboration underscores his firm belief in the transformative power of collective knowledge and shared expertise.
Gianfranco Santovito's research in the Italian Antarctic Research Program (PNRA) stands as a testament to his dedication and expertise. He has participated in nine scientific expeditions, studying the physiological responses of Antarctic animals to environmental changes of natural and anthropic origin. His contributions were recognized in 2011 when he was awarded the Service Medal Antarctica by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) for his service as a member of the USA Antarctic expedition in 2010.
He is a member of some commissions of trust, and in particular, he is a topics board member of Antioxidants (since 2020) and a review panel member of the Portuguese Polar Program (PROPOLAR, since 2022).
Gianfranco Santovito's active engagement in the academic community is evident through his membership in five esteemed scientific societies. He has been a member of the Unione Zoologica Italiana since 2001, the Italian Society of Physiology since 2003, the Italian Association of Developmental and Comparative Immunobiology since 2012, the Italian Society of Protistologists since 2013, and the International Society of Protistologists since 2015.
He authorised over 350 scientific contributions published in national and international journals, books, and conference proceedings.
